Two large carnivorous species are now living together in a new mixed enclosure, the first of it's kind in the UK. The two species, the North American Black Bear (Ursus americanus) and the Canadian Timber Wolf (Canis lupus), exist together in North American wilds. Bears and wolves do not compete directly for the same resources so conflicts between them are rare.
Simiar mixed reserves have been successfully trialled in Germany (Berlin Zoo) and the USA, and create a more stimulating environment for both species.
The old wolf enclosure has been extended to include a new large piece of land, forming an area big enough for both species to live together. The new area includes woodland and areas covered in undergrowth and bracken, which provide both species with new and interesting terrain. The bears and wolves benefit from experiencing new living conditions, and Safari Park visitors can see animals in more natural groupings.
